I've made some progress on the Summer Crossroads quilt. After finishing the donation quilt, I turned my attention to this quilt, and my goal was to complete at least one block every day and join a couple of them. Yesterday, I finished the top row (10 blocks). A quilting friend suggested putting the blocks together in small sections instead of long rows. She said it was easier and less likely to show any unevenness. What do you think?
The stash report has showed very little change since the only thing I'm doing now is making blocks out of fabric that has already been cut, but I have had to cut fabric for a few more blocks and some sashing strips.

I used to sew sections and just shifted to rows. LOL. I find the latter easier to control the direction I press the seam in--important since I press to the side and nest to match up. Also sewing one row at a time makes it easy if a small adjustment is needed.

ReplyDeleteVery pretty. The white sashing really shows off those colors. I prefer to sew by rows, but I know others who assemble in "chunks".
ReplyDeleteI think it probably depends on how one's mind works! Sometimes I do it one way, and sometimes another, depending on the block. If you're happy with the rows, stick with that, but if you aren't, try the blocks. =) How's that for being helpful? I do love the look of this with the white going through. No matter how you put it together, it's going to be lovely! It does look like summer.
ReplyDeleteLovely blocks! The white really sets them off. I haven't found any particular advantage to not sewing in rows, but it won't hurt to try and stick with whatever you like for this quilt. With small sections, you might feel like you're getting things together faster!

ReplyDeleteI may have said it before, but I do love that quilt! as for piecing...I was taught to join row by row so I seem to stick to that format but I can see how joining sections could be advantageous. Thanks for linking up at Bits 'n Bobs for Design Board Monday.

ReplyDeleteI do either. If I have a lot of bias edges or pieced points coming together, I will do them in smaller blocks just to avoid any chance of accidentally pulling on a long strip.
Lovely quilt, I haven’t been quilting for more than 20 years and I miss it when I see your work :-) I used to do rows most of the time and I found it easier to get the joins correct, but I think it is all to do with what you are used to. I used blocks for thicker material, and I once made a quilt with velvet (never again!) where I also put together in small sections. Was a nightmare to get right. These days I am doing creative work on my computer instead of behind my sewing machine.
