Trying Out Color Combinations

I agreed to demonstrate quilt as you go at our group next week, and that gave me an opportunity to try out some color combinations on test blocks I've been making today. For my next lap quilt for the group, I think I'll use the brown combination. It will make a good quilt for a man I think.

Along with these card trick blocks, the butterflies are still on the design board too. Thanks to leaders and enders, I think I have more than enough wing sections done. Now I need to come up with another leader and ender quilt.

  2. all the colour combinations look good although I have to admit I balk at the way we assign colours to boys, girls, men, women etc... I think people love different combinations of colours whatever their sex. My boy's favourite colour was pink for many years... possibly because he had a dominant elder sister LOL. Mind you he chose to buy himself a lime green suit in his 20s so maybe he's just an individual. Another son tie dyed fabric for his suit for his formal... a veritable rainbow. Guess not everyone is as free spirited as my boys. Love the colours anyway. Card Trick is a great block. Hope you find a leaders and enders project soon

  4. Your blues and browns look lovely! I am so interested in learning more about color combinations that pop and are fabulous. I know when I see them but grouping from stash, I've not had the best of luck with.

  5. You're right of course. I do make that assumption, maybe not that men wouldn't like the blues, but that they wouldn't care for pastels as much. With these quilts, we don't have the opportunity to ask the recipient what their favorite colors are. The main consideration should probably be whether the colors we choose will hold up to washing frequently and in whatever detergents the nursing homes use. If possible, I try to avoid reds for that reason, seems like they fade faster than other colors.

Thanks for visiting and making me think about this. I'll be thinking about it for awhile I'm sure.

  6. I'm drawn to blues too, but I like the browns here mainly because they aren't so busy.

  7. I have a horrible time finding colors from my stash. So much easier at the store for some reason. That's one reason I'm trying to use up my stash. Seems like I pick a color from the stash and then either don't have enough of it, or nothing to go with it and I have to go to the store anyway. My favorite way to pick colors is to lay some out and then take off my glasses. (I'm near-sighted.) Then, in the blur, the colors in each fabric meld into one color and I can tell whether the colors are good together without the pattern getting in the way. In the case of these blues, there is not enough scale difference.

  10. Thank you. I hope you meant the brown ones. I think I'm going to make the quilt out of those. I've already used the others for FMQ practice. Marti

  11. Thank you. And yes, they do have something of an antique look. I think when I buy more fabric, I'll look for repro prints for it.

  13. Thank you! I like brown and blue together, and I wanted to try out the card trick block for quite awhile. I'm using these for practice but one of these days I think I'll make a quilt with these colors.
