March UFO and Design Wall Monday

I've decided on the Around the World quilt as my March UFO. I put it on hold when I was trying to decide on a border and now I've decided not to put a border on it at all, so all it needs is quilting. Surely I can get that done in a month, and start prepping the next quilt for a finish.





I finally got up my nerve to start appliqueing the butterflies onto blocks. It was easier than I thought, but I am going to have to watch the tips as the threads seem to pile up there.





On the wall is the postage stamp Double Irish Chain, which is just a few blocks shy; the Butterflies, which I'm basting to a lightweight muslin and turning. Probably not the best choice, but it seems more durable for a quilt that will be used, and I'm still not confident enough to do turned needle. And last on the wall is the Sweet Sixteen, which I hope to make into a twin size, so I have quite a way to go yet.

    I don't think you need a border on that beautiful trip around the world...and yes those butterflies are amazing.

    Trip Around The World is gorgeous. I've never seen one made with large blocks.

    Machine and hand appliqué have always intimidated me.

    I used to just work on one, but I've found with 3 or 4 in the works, I always have something to do when I run into a roadblock with one of them. And since I started using leaders and enders, I always something scrappy going on. My plan is to work on machine work during the day and hand work in the evenings while I sit with Hubby. That hasn't been happening, but it's my goal. So it's nice to have a quilt that needs some hand stitching ready for that.

    Thank you. I'm pleased with the one block I've appliqued to the muslin and hope the rest go on as well. I've always wanted to do a Double Irish Chain, but I admit the postage stamp size is trying my patience. But from the back of a galloping horse it looks fine. ;)

    Thank you! I agonized for a long time before I too decided it just didn't need a border. Now I'll be agonizing over borders for the butterflies because that one will need sashing and borders, and that is always hard for me.

    They are 4 inch blocks, and just guessing now since it's been so long since I started it, but I bet I found a pattern that called for that size blocks. But yes, I see a lot that are 2 inch blocks.

    Applique in general intimidates me. Well, maybe not fusible but I wanted more of a finished look than a satin stitch around it. What I'd really like to learn is turned needle.

    I love the butterfly blocks. All of your design wall projects look great. A Scrappy Irish chain is on my bucket list, way down there, but there all the same.

    Thank you. I've enjoyed making the butterflies, but now I just wish they were done. I had always wanted to do a postage stamp quilt, so I can mark that off my bucket list, but I do wish I hadn't done a double Irish chain with them. I'm having a terrible time matching seams and ending up with a block the right size.

    Love the colors of the "Around the World". Did I say that right? Everyone else seems to know what's going on with the quilting!! Since I'm not a quilter I can just say" Oooooh, that's pretty!!." I like the butterflies, too. Some day I will find the time to quilt. Hope all of your snow and ice has melted by now. Stay warm! This has been a crazy Winter for sure!

    Thank you. I like quilting but feel that I will always be a beginner. So much to learn still.

    I thought the UFO per month was a good idea too. Wish I'd thought of it first, but at least I jumped on the band wagon when I heard of it. lol
